Prison Work, New Zealand and worldwide

Our volunteer prison work is focused on enabling men and women to think deeply about their personal life journey, their values and aspirations, and support a desire to change their lifestyle for a successful personal and family life. This often supports a sense of new purpose, strategies for improving themselves, their personal and family relationships, and reducing the risk of reoffending.

We work in three distinct areas: the man/woman you are (manhood/womanhood), marriage & partnership, and parenthood. Those in prison often lose their closest relationships, have damaged relationships, and have a sense of helplessness in mending or improving them. Being physically absent they have to work harder at the opportunities they have to rebuild confidence in themselves and trust from those closest to them. Very often they come from a damaged background where they have had a very difficult upbringing themselves, abuse, or poor role models, so they are learning from scratch how to be a positive person, a loving partner/spouse, and a great parent. Sometimes it’s about breaking a generational pattern.

Our studies and workshops with prisoners enables them to make personal change related to values, character and behaviour. This often gives greater confidence to family and friends, prison custodians, case workers, probation officers and parole officers, who can see a real change.
